STARSseq Requests

The STARSeq subsidy mechanism is an effort to harmonize costs across all Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) services offered by internal CCR Cores (the CCR Sequencing Facility, the Single Cell Analysis Facility, the CCR Genomics Core, and the Genomics Technology Lab). Sequencing platforms eligible for this subsidy include, Illumina, PacBio, and Oxford Nanopore. Please inquire with OSTR if you have questions about eligibility for other platforms.

STARSeq subsidy guidelines are as follows:
  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the fiscal year.
  • Any PI exceeding $15,000 in cumulative sequencing costs during the fiscal year may apply for STARSseq funding.
  • After the initial $15,000 threshold is reached, cumulative sequencing costs will be subsidized at 50% up to $15,000 subsidy/year/PI.
    • For single-cell and spatial projects in SCAF, SF, and CCR Genomics Core, these limits only apply to the sequencing costs itemized on project estimates.
    • Large, one-time sequencing projects may be submitted as separate STARS requests by PIs who have reached their subsidy limit ($15,000).
    • STARS should be used when an individual project (e.g., a large single cell RNAseq or whole exome sequencing study etc.) will have exceptional costs, including but not limited to NGS costs, and the PI would like to request >$10,000 in supplemental funding.
  • PIs can monitor their cumulative NGS expenses on their STARS PI dashboard.
Instructions for STARSseq submission:
  1. Once the $15,000 total NGS expense threshold is reached, subsidy for additional NGS requests submitted (see #4 below) may be requested using the STARS system at the OSTR website
  2. Using the radio button on the form available on the STARS system, select STARSseq funding. This is distinct from the regular STARS request mechanism.
  3. Select the Core for your planned project from the Service Core drop-down menu. PIs are encouraged to combine multiple service requests from the same core lab in one STARSseq application.
  4. As with all other STARS programs, PI’s incur NGS charges and will receive reimbursement for the STARSseq subsidy amount.
